Coronavirus, School Closures, and Relay

With the number of Coronavirus cases in the US and around the world increasing, and expected to continue to do so, more schools are developing school closure plans. In many cases, these also include options for distance learning options that would allow learning to continue in the case of extended school closures.

Three things to know about Lightspeed Systems and Relay as you develop school closure and preparedness plans related to Coronavirus and other incidents:

1. Relay Filter protects students, even off campus
Students being out of school and at home for extended periods can mean they spend more time online. Distance learning can also mean students who don’t usually take devices home will need to do so. Content filtering that effectively protects students whether at school or at home is essential. In addition, isolation can increase depression among students, so safety monitoring can be an important part of at-home filtering.

Relay Filter protects students on school devices at school, at home, and everywhere in between. Smart Agents deployed to devices ensure that filtering can’t be removed and policies and AUPs are enforced even if school campuses are closed. Safety Check extends this protection to include real-time monitoring and alerts on students at risk of self-harm or violence. To ensure protection when devices are at home, check your After School Rules in Relay Filter and make sure filtering and reporting are in place after school hours and off school networks.

2. Relay Classroom can help with remote learning
The possibility of extended closures is leading many schools to develop remote learning plans so classes can continue even if students are at home. This can limit the impact Coronavirus, closures, and quarantines have on learning. It can also help continue learning for absent students.

Relay Classroom allows classroom management to continue even when school devices are used off campus, so teachers can keep students on-task and monitor class activities remotely. To enable remote learning and classroom management, check your Classroom admin settings to allow use of Classroom when devices are off campus.
